Our Murals Promote Sustainable Actions

Proceeds from your purchases directly support our environmental education events! The following murals have been created by students at various outreach events. Environmental messages were created by Earthright Insight. Children at the outreach event where taught about the science and concepts involved in each message. Then children used their imaginations to paint about what they learned. Finally, our Earthright Insight artist, Joanne Onorato, touched up the paintings for the completed murals you see here. Message conveyed: Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides that are applied to lawns are transported into local waters via rainwater. These chemcials are known to be harmful in various ways to surface waters

Message conveyed: Residue from our automobile exhaust settles on pavement and then is washed into the local surface water when it rains. These residues are known to be toxic to aquatic life.

Message conveyed: When a car is washed in a driveway, then the soap residue is washed into the local surface water. The nutrients from the soap provide a base for excessive algal growth and the end result is decreased oxygen in the surface water, which in turn harms the aquatic life.

Message conveyed: Oftentimes groundwater is the source of tap water in our homes. Groundwater also sustains local lakes and streams. Therefore, if we overuse groundwater supplies, then local surface water supply is dimished and aquatic life is stressed.

Pet waste is harmful to aquatic communities because nutrients provide a base for excessive algal growth and the end result is decreased oxygen in the surface water, which in turn harms the aquatic life. In addition, pathogens from the feces become a human health hazard.
